Letter From Dear Doctor
Issue 31 of Dear Doctor Magazine
The Best of Prevention
Preventive healthcare is a bit like magic; in fact one definition even describes prevention as “the non-occurrence of an anticipated event.” Today, preventive care is considered a major part of healthcare, both on an individual and community level. After all, it is more advantageous and less costly, to prevent disease rather than to treat it.
In this issue we highlight and update some of the more important topics of preventive care that we have published in the service of keeping you healthy — not just in body, but also in mind and spirit.
Our updated review of “Daily Oral Hygiene” is arguably is the most important lesson you’ll ever learn at your dentist’s. More than anything else you do, effective oral hygiene will help ensure dental health for life. In addition, our update on “Nutrition & Oral Health” discusses how what you eat affects not only your general health, but also has profound and direct effects upon your oral health. In that vein, “Assessing Risk For Tooth Decay” provides a new look at an old disease; how the use of new biotechnology means you no longer have to wait for cavities to form but can actively identify your personal risk and prevent tooth decay from even starting. And “The Age One Dental Visit” is a very important first step in ensuring oral health for both baby, and family. We also review the very important topic of “Fluoride and Fluoridation,” described by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as “One of the ten most effective public health measures of the 20th Century.”
If you do think prevention is a bit like magic, be sure to read our amazing interview with David Copperfield, one of the most extraordinary magicians of our time. And learn too, how he has not only benefited from magic, but also preventive dental care!
As always, we seek to inform, educate, and enlighten you in the most entertaining of ways in how to prevent disease and maintain health. It really can be quite magical!Sincerely,
Mario A.Vilardi, DMD
