Letter From Dear Doctor

Issue 25 of Dear Doctor Magazine

Because We Care

As they say, “We've come a long way baby.” From childhood to old age, modern dentistry and oral healthcare have made great strides. This issue really does have something for people of all ages and concerns.

Is dentistry really stress-free these days? Well, close to it. An early introduction to dental care for our youngest recipients can do so much to make a real lifetime of difference for our children, and even make going to the dentist enjoyable. Read all about it in “Taking the Stress Out of Dentistry For Kids.”

In adulthood, we may find that we require more specialized dental treatment. What happens during root canal treatment? And when do you need to see a periodontist? Is chronic jaw joint pain associated with other inflammatory ailments? We answer these important questions in this issue. And, in light of concerns about hygiene and safety in the dental office that pop up in the news once in awhile, we are glad to report that dentistry has an excellent track record in this area, as you will see. We also include a consultation on “Cost-Saving Treatment Alternatives,” a way of providing interim solutions for treating dental disease in these still uncertain economic times. But there is so much more in the pages of this issue, both in topics and in caring.

On the other end of the spectrum, older individuals may experience problems with tooth loss. Here you can learn how the dental profession's research and clinical experience with dental implants have come together — to provide the most elegant and affordable solutions to rehabilitate those who have lost all their teeth. See how “New Teeth in One Day” can become a reality when the time is spent beforehand — using a team approach and careful pre-planning — to make this amazing treatment achievable and affordable.

And that brings us to a very special article in which we pay tribute to two luminaries in modern dentistry, Drs. Morton Amsterdam and D. Walter Cohen — our guiding lights and mentors. Pervading the pages of Dear Doctor, since its inception, is the work of these preceptors in the field of dental education and clinical care. We celebrate their accomplishments in “A Historical Perspective of Advanced Dental Care.” Periodontal Prosthesis, developed by Dr. Amsterdam, is an interdisciplinary approach to treatment of advanced disease that has revolutionized dental care, and which provides a framework of understanding that guides practitioners in all fields of dentistry to this day.

Because we care, it has been, and continues to be our goal to help you understand the nature of dentistry and oral health. We want to make this information accessible in a fun and entertaining way, so that you can make knowledgeable decisions along with your healthcare providers. Ultimately, we want you to enjoy a lifetime of both oral and general health.

Sincerely,

Mario A.Vilardi, DMD
