The Meaning behind the Official Symbol of Dentistry

Have you ever looked at the official emblem of dentistry in your dentist's office and wondered about its history and meaning? If so, well you aren’t the first to do so! It was adopted by the American Dental Association (ADA) in 1965 but its origin dates back to ancient times and to Asclepius, one of the earliest gods associated with health, his abilities to heal, and his humane treatments and remedies. You find him in the emblem as the snake wrapped around his staff. Behind him are 32 leaves and 20 berries representing the numbers of permanent and primary teeth.
