Honus Wagner’s healthy lifestyle paid off big!

Do you know the story behind baseball's highest selling card in history?

In the early 1900's, tobacco manufacturers put baseball cards in cigarette packages. Honus Wagner played from 1897 to 1917 and was one of the first five players to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Wagner was also an independent thinker and a non-smoker. He refused to have his card inserted into cigarette packages because it is thought that he was concerned that children would be tempted to smoke. Production and distribution of his card was halted. This anti-tobacco outcry accounts for his card being one of the rarest in baseball. A 1909 Honus Wagner card sold for $2.35 million in 2007.
