About Dr. Ostwald
Dr. Stephen Ostwald earned his dental degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1981 and then completed a two-year general practice residency at the prestigious Mt. Zion Hospital. While there, he became interested in the treatment of dental anxiety. He partnered in developing protocols for the treatment of dental fear. In 1989, Dr. Ostwald started "A People Oriented Dental Practice" with the premise that any patient seeking treatment might have some issues surrounding their dental care. Dr. Ostwald believes in spending time developing the trusting relationships with his patients so crucial to successful treatment. He is a member of the American Dental Assoc., the California Dental Assoc., the San Francisco Dental Society and is a founding father of the San Francisco Academy for the Advancement of Dental Education 1990-2007.

Focused on Prevention
Whether you wish to maintain your current level of oral health or improve your appearance and function, Dr. Ostwald's team believes in partnering with patients to keep dental issues from becoming major problems. They feel that preventative dentistry is the key to good oral health care. In addition to cleanings, regular examinations, and patient education, the latest in dental technology is offered to help maintain the health of your gums and teeth. All of your treatments will be customized to meet your individual needs. They will take the time to setup an individualized gum health management program including helping you establish a daily regimen of home care.

Excellence in Care
Dr. Ostwald and his team are committed to providing comprehensive care with a special emphasis on developing trust and understanding of each patient's specific wishes and needs. He utilizes the appropriate technology and current procedures to allow him to maintain high standards of excellence for his patients. In addition to this thorough assessment, he also provides the following services:

Restorative and Cosmetic Care: Implants, crowns, bridges, tooth colored fillings, bleeching and veneers are used to restore a patient's mouth to optimum health, function and aesthetics. The office also uses CEREC® 3D technology to allow placement of a conservative porcelain restoration or crown in just one visit.

Gum Disease: Dr. Ostwald's team is well prepared and knowledgeable in identifying and dealing with this common and sometimes serious dental disease. They offer charting and diagnostic services to identify developing disease as well as in-office therapy and education to provide effective treatment.

Occlusal (bite) Analysis and Management: After assessing your bite, treatment options will be provided to correct possible habit patterns such as clenching, grinding, abnormal wear, or poor tooth positioning, which may also help with headaches, snoring and TMJ issues.

Treatment of Dental Fear
Although Dr. Ostwald treats patients who report no issues or fears about dental visits, nearly 80% of new patients surveyed report some level of anxiety or issues with treatment while 10% label themselves as "highly fearful or phobic". Over the past twenty-five years, Dr. Ostwald has worked with hundreds of self-proclaimed dental phobic or highly anxious patients in overcoming their fear. One of Dr. Ostwald's highest priorities is helping patients who may otherwise avoid dental treatment receive care in a safe and comfortable environment.
