Understanding the Reasons for Dizziness in the Dental Chair

For some people, standing up after sitting in the dental chair for an extended period can lead to dizziness or even fainting. This may also happen if the dental experience itself triggers too much anxiety. Postural (body position) hypotension (low blood pressure) usually results when suddenly going from a lying or seated position to a standing position thus causing these symptoms.

You may also get these same feelings immediately following a tooth numbing shot; however, this feeling is usually caused by the small amount of adrenalin contained in the shot. The good news is that these conditions are easy to correct! If you are prone to dizziness or fainting, discuss these issues and your concerns with your dental professionals. If necessary, they can even allow more time to accommodate your needs so that you are able to have safe, successful dental experiences.
